Showcase Projects: A Film, a Podcast, a Community Building Project, a Digital Media App., a River Archeology metre and an Urban Greenway...
Aim: To demonstrate (or ‘Showcase’) a range of approaches which may be replicated in other areas of the city post-BGC2015; to share learning and good practice and develop a series of case-studies which can be used by other Parks groups in the future.
1. Film – The role of Parks and Green Spaces in the City. How do Parks and Green Spaces contribute to the lives of Bristol’s residents? Told through the stories of Parks Groups volunteers, and users of Parks and Green Spaces in South Bristol. Knowle West Media Centre and South Bristol Parks Groups
2. Radio Show (& podcasts) for broadcast on Ujima Radio and BBC Radio Bristol – The role of Parks in the Inner City. How do Parks and Green Spaces contribute to the lives of Bristol’s residents? Told through the stories of Parks Groups volunteers, and users of Parks and Green Spaces in St.Pauls and Easton. Ujima Radio CIC and St.Pauls & Easton Parks Groups
3. Project Ardagh: How can UWE (Architecture and Planning, Environment and Technology, Sports Management and others) support community projects focussed on buildings in Bristol? This project aims to develop (through a case study focused on the Ardagh site on Horfield Common) a replicable model which demonstrates how UWE can support community organisations and Parks Groups across the city to achieve outcomes in support of Civic aims & can continue to be used and developed post-BGC2015. UWE and Friends of Horfield Common
4. The ‘Pipeline Walk’ celebrates the route of the first source of clean, fresh water being delivered to Redcliffe in the 12th century. The pipeline passes directly under Victoria Park, as well as a range of other community managed sites (including food growing locations) in South Bristol. UWE Creative Industries Teaching and Learning Fellow, and Digital Media Specialist, will work with VPAG and other community organisations in South Bristol to create a showcase app combining this walking route with stories of the people and histories of the area through film, photography and sound. UWE, Victoria Park Action Group and South Bristol Community Organisations (Knowle, Bedminster, Redcliffe)
5. Bristol City Council, Bristol Tree Forum, English Heritage and Southmead Hospital. A Greenway for Doncaster Road will join the new super-hospital on Southmead Road with Badocks Woods and Nature Reserve, showcasing the ‘Greenways’ project approach proposed by John Grimshaw which aim to introduce trees into streets between green spaces – effectively drawing the Park out into the surrounding streets. English Heritage's Heritage Schools Programme lends support to the project through it's work with local primary schools - exploring how local area improvements can impact on the health and lives of young people in the area.
The project aims to ‘create attractive routes, cleaner air, cooler conditions, healthier lives as well as functioning as a visual guide for the route between one location and another.
As Southmead hospital is a key site in North Bristol with high levels of visitors and limited parking – encouraging active travel, and enabling this through parks and green spaces which function as walking routes, cycle routes and green corridors to wider areas of the city means that this project is an excellent ‘showcase’ for an approach that there are aspirations to replicate across the city post-BGC2015.
6. Frome Valley River Archeology Project
Pupils from primary schools in the Fishponds area (Oldbury Court, Glenfrome, Begbrook and Fromevale) will work with Oldbury Court Friends group, English Heritage Schools Programme, Steve England and UWE Teacher Training students to excavate 1m of the bed of the River Frome, to uncover the history of the area through the riverbed itself, create a resource for other schools to use in the park, and encourage other young people and their teachers to get out into parks and green spaces across the city to bring local area learning and learning outside the classroom alive for young people city-wide.
